Omron CP1E vs CP2E: What to Know Before Upgrading or Sourcing

Presents CP2E as the migration path from CP1E, but its own replacement guide also makes clear that this is not a universal one-for-one swap across every model. 

That distinction matters because most buyers searching “ CP1E vs CP2E” are not comparing two PLCs in a vacuum. They are usually trying to answer something more practical: which one reduces engineering risk, replacement trouble, and purchasing friction.

What actually changed

CP2E is the newer compact controller in this comparison, aimed at compact equipment that needs better communication, monitoring, and machine-to-machine connectivity.

It also brings more headroom on the software side, with function blocks, structured text support inside FB definitions, larger program capacity on some models, batteryless backup for key memory areas, and a wider operating temperature range of -20 to 60 degrees C instead of 0 to 55 degrees C on CP1E. 

CP1E, though, should not be dismissed too quickly. In real plants, it still shows up in existing machines, spare-parts cabinets, and retrofit jobs where the real priority is not “newer” but “least disruptive.”

For a new design, that table usually points people toward CP2E. For a replacement job, it mostly tells you where the hidden labor is.

Where replacement jobs go wrong

On replacement work, small mismatches matter more than people expect. The most obvious example is the 10-point CPU: CP1E has it, but CP2E does not, so ’s own replacement path is to move that application to a 14-point CP2E. 

The trickier problems show up after the quotation stage. CP1E-NA20 has no direct CP2E replacement, some CP1E-N transistor-output AC-power models do not have direct CP2E-N equivalents, and the CP2E no longer includes the old analog adjuster function.

That is exactly the kind of detail that can turn a “simple replacement” into a panel change, a small software rework, or an unexpected accessory line on the PO. 

Communication is another common trap. If the original machine used a CP1W-CIF41 Ethernet option board, that board cannot be reused on CP2E-N, and if the old setup depended on built-in RS-232C on a CP1E-N, the CP2E-N needs a CP1W-CIF01 option board when RS-232C is still required.

Also notes that the supply voltage range stays the same, but power consumption can increase depending on the CP2E model, so even the power budget deserves a quick check before anyone assumes the swap is routine. 

Software conversion is better than many buyers expect, but it is not automatic magic. specifies CX-Programmer version 9.72 or later for changing programs and settings from CP1E to CP2E, and the replacement guide explicitly warns that compile checks alone may not catch every issue. A trial run before actual operation is still part of the recommended process. 

What to confirm before buying

A careful RFQ for CP1E or CP2E should do more than name the family. You want the full CPU suffix, output type, power supply type, I/O count, communication method, and any option board already installed in the machine. A CP1E-E10, a CP1E-N40, and a CP1E-NA20 are not the same replacement exercise at all. 

A few checkpoints save time later:

• Confirm whether the job is a new build or a live replacement.
• Check whether the machine uses RS-232C, RS-485, Modbus-RTU, or an Ethernet option board, because the port arrangement can change across CP1E and CP2E models. 
• Ask which software version the engineering team is using, especially when a conversion is planned through CX-Programmer. 
• Verify whether battery-backed behavior, PLC setup carryover, or analog functions matter on the existing machine, because those details do not map identically across every transition. 

In practice, retrofit RFQs often become messy because the BOM says only “replace CP1E” and leaves out the suffix, option board, and output type.

That is usually where the extra revision cycle starts. Procurement asks for a quote, engineering reopens the drawings, the supplier asks for photos, and what looked like a fast reorder becomes a back-and-forth over ports and accessories.

For overseas sourcing, this is also where supplier discipline matters more than price alone. Ask for clear part-number confirmation, stock confirmation, product photos, carton photos, and a written reply on whether the unit is new and original.

Buyers in the US and Europe usually notice this only after a bad experience, but it is much cheaper to check before shipment than after commissioning.

When the project also includes HMI, servo, sensors, or cable, a one-stop RFQ often makes more sense than splitting the order across multiple vendors.
