Upgrading a Weintek iE HMI to cMT X: Project, Resolution and Port Checks

A Weintek iE project can be migrated to a cMT X HMI in EasyBuilder Pro, but selecting a new model does not finish the replacement. The panel must fit, its ports must support the existing connections, and the converted project must behave correctly on the machine.

Table of Contents

Start with the complete model number on the old HMI. “A 7-inch Weintek” leaves too much unanswered: resolution, serial interfaces, connector assignments and mounting dimensions can differ within a screen-size category.

Before ordering, establish three things: you have a usable project, the proposed hardware suits the installation, and there is time to test the converted application.

Keep a working original before changing the project

Locate the editable EasyBuilder Pro project and record the software version used to maintain it. Open it and confirm that it belongs to the machine being upgraded. A familiar start screen is not enough; check a distinctive alarm, a recently added setting or a device address against the running application.

Save an untouched copy. Separately record information that may be needed during commissioning:

  • HMI network settings and connected PLC addresses.
  • Serial communication settings and photographs of cable connections.
  • Current recipes and retained settings that matter to production.
  • Required historical records and the method used to collect them.
  • Access credentials available to authorized maintenance personnel.

Treat project files and production data as separate backup tasks. Having the screen design does not establish that the latest recipe values or historical records have been preserved.

WeintekUSA recommends compressing the original project in its existing EasyBuilder Pro version, then uncompressing it in the newer version before migration. This provides a defined starting point for the conversion. WeintekUSA project migration instructions

Convert the project and read the migration report

In EasyBuilder Pro, open System Parameter Settings and select the exact target HMI model. The migration changes the iE .emtp project into a cMT .cmtp project.

Review the resulting project migration report. Resolve compilation errors, then investigate warnings individually. Keep a short record of each affected function and how it will be tested. WeintekUSA includes both warning resolution and application validation in its migration procedure.

A successful compile is the point at which testing can begin. It does not demonstrate that a button performs every intended action or that a maintenance window remains accessible.

Pay attention to controls that occupy the same space

Weintek documents a particular migration difference: on cMT/cMT X, only the topmost overlapping object can be triggered. A legacy design that relies on touching several stacked objects therefore needs review; a Combo Button may provide the intended sequence of actions. Weintek upgrade guide, Overview and “Overlapping Objects”

For example, a control might both write a value and open another window. During testing, verify both results. Seeing the new window appear does not prove that the PLC received the value.

Give similar attention to operator login, pop-up windows, recipe selection and alarm acknowledgement. These deserve explicit tests because a fault can remain unnoticed while the main production page looks normal.

Same panel cutout, different screen resolution

Weintek lists cMT2058XH as a recommended alternative to MT8051iE. This is a useful example of why mechanical fit and project layout need separate checks. Weintek recommended alternatives

EthernetOne 10/100 portLAN 1: 10/100/1000; LAN 2: 10/100

For these two models, the published cutout and overall dimensions match. The pixel dimensions do not.

After conversion, inspect every operating window at the target resolution. Check text inside buttons, numeric fields with their longest expected values, alarm rows, keyboard placement and pop-ups near screen edges. Review every language used on the machine.

Small controls also need a physical touch test. A layout that looks acceptable on a large engineering monitor can be awkward on a 4.3-inch panel.

Avoid redesigning the entire interface during the first conversion pass. Establish a working migrated version, then make deliberate layout improvements. That makes it easier to identify whether an unexpected result came from conversion or from a later edit.

Check the space behind the door

Matching cutout dimensions do not settle the installation. Measure the available space with connectors fitted and the cabinet door closed.

Look for cable bends against nearby components, obstructed mounting clips and terminals that become difficult to reach. Check the target model’s panel-thickness requirements, gasket installation, power supply requirements and environmental ratings against the actual enclosure.

Use drawings for the full model being purchased. The comparison above does not establish compatibility for every iE and cMT X combination.

Trace each connection from the project to the cable

Before removing the old panel, make a connection list. For each device, record the EasyBuilder Pro driver, physical interface and cable destination.

ConnectionWhat to compareEvidence needed before installation
RS-232COM assignment, connector gender, Tx/Rx/GND and any required handshake signalsBoth HMI pinouts and the device’s connection drawing
RS-485Two-wire or four-wire mode, signal pins, polarity, station number and serial settingsExisting wiring traced against the new model
EthernetPLC address, subnet, selected HMI interface and intended network separationA documented address plan
USB equipmentHost/client role and support for the attached deviceTarget-model specifications and application requirements
DC supplyVoltage range, current capacity, polarity and terminal arrangementInstallation documentation and supply measurements

A connector that plugs in proves only that the connector fits. Do not use that as a pinout check.

The cMT2058XH, for example, places COM1 and COM3 functions on a shared 9-pin D-sub connector. Its datasheet also specifies a USB host port and no USB client port. Those details matter when planning cable reuse and engineering access.

For Ethernet, document which socket will connect to the PLC network. Two physical ports should not be treated as interchangeable without checking their configuration.

During a bench test, keep the replacement isolated from the production network until its address is confirmed. Connecting the old and new HMI with the same IP address makes an otherwise simple communication test unreliable.

Check what happens to production records

An upgrade can appear successful until someone tries to retrieve yesterday’s data.

Weintek’s migration guide documents a change from iE sampling files in .dtl format to cMT/cMT X files in .db format. It also describes synchronization requirements for making sampled data available in the designated storage location. Existing collection routines therefore need their own test.

Run a short sample, retrieve the file using the intended production method and open it on the maintenance PC. Confirm timestamps, values and the export format expected by the person who uses the report.

Apply the same practical test to recipes: load a known recipe, inspect the resulting settings and confirm that the correct values reach the controller under controlled conditions. A populated recipe screen alone is insufficient evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do not plan on reverse conversion. WeintekUSA states that cMT projects cannot be converted back to MT projects through this migration route. Preserve the original iE project and keep later changes documented if a rollback remains necessary.

Resolve project recovery before scheduling the replacement. Ask the machine builder or previous integrator for the source project. If recovery from the installed HMI is being considered, establish the applicable upload permissions, passwords and decompilation restrictions first. Do not assume that possession of a running panel guarantees an editable project.

Possibly, but compare the signal assignments at both ends first. Check the required interface, COM number, connector gender and pin functions. The cMT2058XH drawing shows several serial functions sharing one connector; connector shape alone cannot establish compatibility.

Not automatically. First establish whether the converted HMI can use the existing driver, addresses and command sequence. If a discrepancy appears, trace it to the HMI object, communication settings or controller interface before changing PLC logic. Keep any required PLC changes separately documented and tested.

No. It is useful for checking layout and navigation, but it cannot establish cabinet fit, installed cable compatibility or operation on the actual network. Approval should include hardware communication, controlled writes, restart behavior and the operator functions used on that machine.

Commission the replacement in a controlled order

Plan the first live test with the machine in a safe state and unintended operation prevented. Review startup macros and automatic writes before connecting the new application to equipment.

A useful acceptance sequence is:

  1. Confirm communication with known values. Compare several HMI readings with the controller’s monitored values. Include different data types used by the application.
  2. Test permitted writes. Change a controlled test value and confirm the destination, value and any scaling. Do not use a production start command as the first test.
  3. Walk through operator tasks. Test navigation, login, numeric entry, alarm acknowledgement and recipe selection.
  4. Exercise abnormal conditions safely. Confirm that a communication interruption is visible and that stale values cannot be mistaken for current readings.
  5. Restart under controlled conditions. Check startup behavior, retained settings and reconnection.
  6. Retrieve a production record. Verify the actual file or report, not just the on-screen trend.

Keep the original HMI and its project available until the replacement passes the agreed checks. Record the installed model, project revision, software version and final network settings so the next maintenance job starts from known information.
