ATV312 to ATV320 Replacement: Model Cross-Reference and Installation Checks
Table of Contents
The distinction matters when a machine is down. A replacement may have the correct power rating yet arrive without the communication accessory the application needs. Or it may fit inside the enclosure while leaving too little room for cable connections.
Schneider identifies ATV320 compact models as the replacement direction for ATV312 open-style drives, while ATV320 book-format models follow the ATV32. Its guidance describes similar physical construction, without promising an identical installation. Schneider Electric replacement guidance
ATV312 to ATV320 model cross-reference
The following are selected replacements listed on Schneider Electric’s product pages. The voltage column describes the replacement’s nominal supply range; it should not be confused with operating tolerances sometimes shown in older product descriptions.
| Existing ATV312 reference | Listed ATV320 replacement | Motor power | Replacement supply |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATV312H075M2 | ATV320U07M2C | 0.75 kW | 200–240 V, single-phase |
| ATV312H075N4 | ATV320U07N4C | 0.75 kW | 380–500 V, three-phase |
| ATV312HU15N4 | ATV320U15N4C | 1.5 kW | 380–500 V, three-phase |
| ATV312HU22N4 | ATV320U22N4C | 2.2 kW | 380–500 V, three-phase |
This is a partial cross-reference, covering those four references only. For another ATV312 model, look up its complete part number rather than constructing an ATV320 reference by changing letters.
Notice that the two 0.75 kW drives have different supply requirements. A purchase request that says only “ATV320, 0.75 kW” leaves an essential selection detail unresolved.
Before requesting a quotation, collect photographs of the drive and motor nameplates, the existing parameter backup, the electrical drawings and any fitted options. Include the machine’s duty: a lightly loaded conveyor and a mechanism with frequent braking may need different application checks even when their motors carry the same kW rating.

Check the cabinet before placing the order
Measure the usable space around the existing drive, including the space occupied by wiring ducts and cable bends. Compare that with the exact replacement’s dimensional drawing.
Check mounting holes, depth, cooling clearances and access to terminals. Review the applicable current derating for cabinet temperature, altitude and switching frequency. The existing mounting arrangement is useful evidence, but it does not establish compliance for the replacement. Schneider’s installation manual provides model-specific dimensions and mounting requirements. ATV320 Installation Manual, NVE41289
This is also the point to settle accessories. On compact ATV320 drives, installing a communication option card requires the VW3A3600 adapter. That requirement concerns option cards; it should not be interpreted as an accessory needed for every installation.
Operator controls deserve a separate check. The ATV320 does not have the ATV312’s local red STOP and green RUN buttons. If operators use those buttons during setup, include an appropriate control arrangement in the replacement plan.
Ask for a quotation that lists the complete drive reference and each required accessory separately. This makes omissions easier to spot before the shutdown.
Rebuild the wiring schedule by function
Prepare a wire-by-wire schedule before removing the old drive. Record what each conductor does, not just where it lands.
Schneider’s migration manual maps ATV312 LI1–LI6 to ATV320 DI1–DI6. The input common and source/sink arrangements still need review; the old CLI terminal has no direct counterpart in the comparison table.
Analog feedback needs attention too. ATV312 AOV/AOC, when used as analog outputs, correspond to ATV320 AQ1, which must be configured for the required voltage or current signal. An AOC terminal used as a digital output requires a different review. ATV312 to ATV320 Migration Manual, pages 16–20
A useful wiring record includes the signal’s purpose, electrical type, associated parameter and destination in the PLC or machine circuit. “Speed feedback to PLC analog input” tells the commissioning engineer more than “wire from AOC.”
Have qualified personnel carry out the electrical work using the applicable isolation, discharge and absence-of-voltage procedures. Before energizing, verify protective grounding, protection-device selection, terminal connections, shielding and covers. STO does not isolate the drive from electrical power; it cannot replace the required electrical isolation procedure.

Use SoMove conversion, then review what it leaves behind
SoMove’s device-conversion function can convert an ATV312 configuration file for an ATV320. Some settings cannot transfer and remain at factory values.
The migration manual identifies limitations affecting reference switching, separate command/reference mode, brake control and PID-related functions. Review these against the actual application before operation. A successful conversion does not establish that the machine will behave correctly.
Keep the original backup unchanged and save the converted configuration separately. If a setting needs adjustment, record why. That record becomes particularly useful when maintenance staff later compare the new drive with drawings or service notes written for the ATV312.
For a network-controlled machine, include the PLC project and communication configuration in the review. Establish which device supplies the run command, where the speed reference comes from, and what the machine should do if communication is lost. Treat those as acceptance requirements before commissioning begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
It needs its own engineering review. Schneider’s stated replacement direction for ATV312 open-style drives is the compact range. A book-format quotation should therefore include confirmation of the physical arrangement and application requirements, rather than relying on matching power alone.
Start with saved commissioning files, machine drawings, PLC documentation and the motor nameplate. Mark any missing settings explicitly. A matching replacement model cannot recover the application settings that were stored only in the failed drive.
Send the full ATV312 reference, motor nameplate, supply details, cabinet photographs, control method and installed accessories. For a quotation enquiry, you can provide those details through Kwoco’s contact page. Ask for the proposed ATV320 reference and accessory list together so the engineer responsible for the machine can review the complete selection.

Plan the first start around the machine
Schneider’s setup sequence begins with power applied without a run command. It then calls for checking motor data, I/O, command settings and application functions, followed by acceleration, deceleration, speed limits and motor thermal-current settings. Unintended digital-input signals must be prevented before power-up. ATV320 Programming Manual, pages 40–41
Prepare a commissioning record with expected results for:
- The intended command source and speed reference.
- Motor direction and permitted operating speeds.
- Acceleration, stopping and any braking sequence.
- Machine interlocks and safety functions.
- Fault indication, reset behavior and communication-loss response.
Run the tests under controlled conditions with qualified personnel and the machine’s approved safety arrangements. Schneider requires commissioning to cover operating states and potential error conditions.
Record actual results alongside the expected behavior. “Motor runs” is too little information for a handover; the next person needs to know which controls, stops and operating modes were checked.
Once accepted, save the final drive configuration with the revised drawings, accessory references and test record. Keep the original ATV312 backup in the same maintenance archive.
