Machine Expert Basic Cannot Connect to a Modicon M221 via USB: What to Check
Table of Contents
Does Windows notice the controller? Does it appear in the software? Does clicking Login produce a specific error? These observations lead to different repairs—and can save you from replacing a PLC that has a problem on the laptop side.
This guide covers the Modicon M221’s USB connection using EcoStruxure Machine Expert – Basic, including installations still carrying older SoMachine Basic component names.
Start with what Windows sees
Open Windows Device Manager before connecting the cable. With no transfer in progress, connect the M221 and watch for a device appearing or the list refreshing.
If nothing changes, work through the physical connection first. If an unknown device or a warning appears, record its device status before changing drivers. If Windows recognizes the device consistently but Machine Expert Basic reports an error, keep that exact message.
A useful maintenance note is specific: “Device appears in Windows, then Login reports Gateway Not Running.” “USB does not work” leaves the next person starting over.
Check the connector and cable
The M221 uses a USB mini-B programming connection. Schneider identifies BMXXCAUSBH018, a USB-A-to-mini-B cable, for PC configuration of the controller. Check the actual connector rather than ordering a cable described only as “Schneider PLC USB.” Schneider Electric cable guidance.
For diagnosis, simplify the connection:
- Use a known-good data cable.
- Connect directly to a laptop USB port where possible.
- Remove an unnecessary hub, extension or docking station.
- If a USB-C adapter is necessary, include it in the substitution test.
Change one item at a time. Replacing the cable, adapter and laptop together may restore communication, but it will not tell you which item failed.
Check that the plug seats properly without sideways tension. If the socket is visibly damaged or loose, stop forcing the connection. An intermittent contact can interrupt a transfer even when the controller initially appears in Windows.

“Cannot launch ModbusDrv.exe”: check the M221 driver
This message gives you a more useful starting point than a general connection failure. Schneider’s M221-specific FAQ associates it with a missing or damaged controller driver. The USB-driver installation prompt can also be missed during initial software installation.
The documented default folder is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Schneider Electric Shared\M221Close Machine Expert Basic and locate the driver supplied with the installation. Schneider names the file M221_Controller.inf, while noting that some installers use M211_Controller.inf. Right-click the supplied file and select Install, using the required administrator permissions. Do not rename the file to make it match an online example.
Reopen the software and test the connection. If the folder or driver is missing, repair the installation using Schneider’s official Machine Expert Basic package.
Avoid downloading a loose executable from a driver website. The error names a component of the installed communication software; it is not an instruction to replace that executable with an unrelated copy.
“Gateway Not Running”: inspect the Windows service
A different message needs a different check.
For the M221’s Gateway Not Running error, Schneider points to the SoMachine Basic Communications Gateway Service being inactive. Its support instructions use the older SoMachine Basic name even though the programming software is now called EcoStruxure Machine Expert Basic. Schneider Electric: Gateway Not Running on M221 login.
Open Windows Services and locate the gateway service associated with the installation. Check its status and start it if stopped. Then retry the connection.
If Windows refuses to start the service, save that error as well. A missing executable, a permission failure and a service that starts but immediately stops require different follow-up work. On a managed engineering laptop, give IT the service name and error rather than asking them to disable security software generally.
Be careful with instructions for other Modicon controllers
Schneider also publishes a broader Usb PLC service troubleshooting article covering several controller families. Some sections apply specifically to M340 or other products, including virtual IP addresses and registry repairs.
Do not transfer those steps to an M221 simply because both controllers connect through USB. Use the M221-specific driver and gateway guidance first; involve Schneider support if the installed USB service itself remains faulty. Schneider Electric: USB PLC service troubleshooting.

When the controller appears, select the USB connection
In Machine Expert Basic, open Commissioning → Connect. USB-connected controllers belong in Local Devices. Select the intended controller and click Login.
The separate Ethernet Devices list and remote IP-address lookup serve Ethernet connections. Changing an Ethernet address is not the normal way to repair a direct USB connection.
Once logged in, check the displayed controller reference and firmware revision. Keep a screenshot before proceeding.
Login and program download are separate operations. Do not click PC to Controller (download) merely to prove that communication works: downloading can overwrite the controller application.
If login succeeds but an upload or download is blocked, investigate the displayed protection or compatibility message. Software version, firmware, application functional level and password protection can affect transfers. A blocked transfer does not by itself establish a bad USB cable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Schneider confirms that the PC’s USB supply can power an M221 for a program download. It cannot power the controller for normal operation. A controller that accepts a USB connection but will not run therefore needs a separate power-supply check; the USB connection alone does not prove its operating supply is present.
No. Select the USB-connected controller under Local Devices. IP-address lookup belongs to the Ethernet connection workflow.
Use the driver supplied with the official EcoStruxure Machine Expert Basic installation. Schneider’s M221-specific FAQ provides its default folder and INF installation procedure. Use that source before trying a generic PLC USB-driver package.
That result makes the original laptop the next place to investigate. Compare the installed driver, communication-service status, software version and USB adapter path. Keep the same cable during the comparison; otherwise, you have changed two variables and cannot isolate the cause.
Not as the first step. Establish reliable device detection and communication first. If a specific compatibility message later requires a version change, review the applicable software, firmware and application requirements before scheduling it. A firmware update should address an identified requirement, not serve as an experiment with an unstable connection.

Use a second laptop to narrow the fault
A controlled comparison is useful when the first checks do not settle the problem. Use a second engineering PC with a suitable, working Machine Expert Basic installation and keep the same controller and cable.
| Test result | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The second PC connects reliably | The original PC deserves further attention | Compare driver installation, gateway service and software version |
| A replacement cable restores connection | The original cable or its contacts are suspect | Retest without the original cable |
| Removing a dock restores connection | The dock or adapter path is implicated | Test the adapter separately |
| Two prepared PCs and known-good cables fail | A controller-side problem becomes more plausible | Record device detection, port condition and exact errors for support |
These results narrow the investigation; they do not certify a component as defective. For example, two laptops built from the same company image may share the same missing driver.
Before requesting a replacement controller, gather its full reference, the software version, Windows device status, exact error text and the substitution tests already completed. If testing identifies a damaged cable or controller, send the reference and connector photos to Kwoco when checking replacement options.
