Connecting a Weintek HMI to an Allen-Bradley Micro850: Driver and Addressing Checklist
Jadual Kandungan
A useful first target is one changing value on a simple screen. Once that works, add the rest of the application. Starting with hundreds of imported tags makes a small addressing mistake much harder to isolate.
This checklist covers the Ethernet tag-based connection in EasyBuilder Pro with a Micro850 project managed in Connected Components Workbench (CCW). Serial communication and Modbus register mapping follow different setup procedures.
Choose the Micro850 Ethernet driver
In EasyBuilder Pro’s device settings, use the following starting configuration:
| Tetapan | Selection |
|---|---|
| PLC driver | Rockwell Micro850 (Ethernet) – Free Tag Names |
| Antara muka | Ethernet |
| Pelabuhan | 44818 |
| HMI station number | 0 |
| Nombor stesen PLC | 1 |
| Multiple Service Packet | Disabled initially |
Weintek specifies Multiple Service Packet support for 2080-L50E and 2080-L70E controllers with firmware v22 or later. Leave it disabled unless the installed controller meets the requirement. Weintek Micro850 Ethernet Connection Guide, page 1.
Read the controller’s complete catalog number before changing that option. “Micro850” alone does not identify the hardware generation.
Also check the driver assigned to the actual screen objects. A project copied from another machine may contain several PLC devices. Correcting one device’s settings will not help an object that still points to a different device.

Establish the actual network addresses
Use the controller’s current address, not an address written in an old project note. Rockwell documents DHCP as the out-of-box Ethernet setting and provides Ethernet configuration under the controller properties in CCW. A replacement controller may therefore arrive with different network behavior from the unit it replaces. Rockwell Micro830, Micro850 and Micro870 User Manual, pages 71–72.
For an isolated commissioning network, this is an illustrative IPv4 arrangement:
| Peranti | Example address | Topeng subnet |
|---|---|---|
| Micro850 | 192.168.10.20 | 255.255.255.0 |
| Weintek HMI | 192.168.10.30 | 255.255.255.0 |
| Engineering PC | 192.168.10.40 | 255.255.255.0 |
These are example addresses, not factory defaults. Obtain suitable unused addresses before connecting to an existing plant network.
If the HMI has multiple Ethernet interfaces, identify which interface is physically connected to the PLC network. A successful PC-to-PLC test does not establish that the HMI has the same network path.
Ping can help with basic reachability, but it cannot validate the selected driver or a tag name. When ping succeeds and every object still fails, move on to the device configuration and application requests.
Address a global variable that exists in the running project
Micro850 CIP symbolic access uses global variables, with exceptions for system and reserved variables. A variable visible inside a local program is not automatically an externally accessible HMI tag.
For example, a global variable named HMI_PartCount gives the HMI an identifiable value to request. A screen caption reading “Part Count” does not define that address.
Before importing, compare the source project with the application actually running in the PLC. A perfectly valid export from yesterday’s project can contain a tag that was renamed this morning.
Export from CCW and import into the correct device
In CCW, right-click the controller and choose Export → Variables. In EasyBuilder Pro, select the Micro850 device and use Import Tags.
Choose the XLS/XLSX importer for CCW’s Excel export. The CSV option is for an EasyBuilder Pro tag export.
Keep the export with the PLC and HMI project backups. After a tag rename or type change, repeat the export and review affected HMI objects. Importing a file successfully proves that the editor accepted it; it does not prove that those variables exist in the connected controller.

Match the value’s type before adjusting its appearance
For initial testing, use straightforward display formats:
| PLC type | HMI format |
|---|---|
| BOOL | sedikit |
| INT | 16-bit signed |
| UINT | 16-bit unsigned |
| DINT | 32-bit signed |
| REAL | 32-bit float |
These mappings follow Weintek’s driver table.
A decimal-point setting is not a substitute for the correct data type. If a REAL value is interpreted as an integer, adjusting the number of displayed decimal places will not repair the interpretation.
Use values that expose mistakes. Zero looks correct under many wrong configurations. A negative integer tests signed handling; a fractional value tests floating-point handling. Initially disable unnecessary scaling so the screen can be compared directly with CCW.
Prove the connection with a small test page
The following is an illustrative commissioning method, not a supplied project. Back up the application before adding variables, and make changes under the machine’s approved commissioning procedure.
Prepare a few global variables that have no connection to motion, outputs or production setpoints:
HMI_TestCount: a DINT changed by approved test logic.HMI_TestReal: a REAL with an easily recognized fractional value.HMI_TestWrite: a dedicated integer for a controlled write test.
First display the read-only values and compare them with CCW. A changing count provides better evidence of live communication than a static zero.
Then test writing to the dedicated variable while monitoring it in CCW. Keep that variable free of logic that overwrites it. If the PLC receives the new value but immediately replaces it, the observed symptom is different from a rejected write.
Do not use a motor-start bit or an output address as a convenient communication test.
Let the failure pattern guide the next check
| Pemerhatian | Next useful check |
|---|---|
| Every test value fails | HMI network interface, target address, driver and protocol options |
| One global scalar works; another does not | Exact tag name, scope, type and current PLC project |
| Values update but look wrong | Signedness, width, floating-point format and scaling |
| Scalars work; an array element fails | Imported dimensions and selected index |
| A write appears briefly, then changes back | PLC logic or another client writing the same variable |
| The test page works; the production page fails | Object device assignments, addresses and page-specific configuration |
Keep the working test page while investigating the production screen. It gives you a stable comparison instead of forcing every test through an object whose configuration is already in doubt.
Soalan Lazim
Not for the symbolic EtherNet/IP method described here. It accesses eligible global variables by name. Modbus mapping belongs to a separate communication approach; adding a mapping table will not correct a misspelled symbolic tag.
Weintek notes that CCW’s spreadsheet export omits I/O tags. Its documented workaround is a separate spreadsheet containing their exact names and types from CCW, imported alongside the global-variable file. Missing entries alone do not indicate a communication fault.
Yes, within the supported controller, driver and data-type limits. Define its dimensions in the global-variable list and verify individual elements after import. Test the first and last intended indices before connecting recipe-transfer functions. Weintek’s published support example confirms two-dimensional access.
A successful read validates only the read operation. Check the input object’s write destination and permitted range, then monitor the variable in CCW during the attempted write. If the value arrives and changes back, investigate competing writes or PLC logic. If it never arrives, investigate the write configuration and any applicable access restrictions.
That is not enough evidence of hardware failure. If other tags update reliably through the same PLC device connection, compare the failed tags’ names, types, dimensions and object settings with a working example. Reproduce the problem on a simple test page before making a replacement decision.

Add arrays after scalar tags work
Weintek’s support guidance confirms multidimensional-array access through imported global variables with correctly defined dimensions. Select the required element after import.
Check the declared bounds rather than assuming that the first element is zero. If the PLC declares an array beginning at index 1, an object aimed at index 0 needs correction before any network troubleshooting.
Rockwell distinguishes one- or two-dimensional arrays of simple types from nested “arrays of arrays”; they are not interchangeable structures for CIP symbolic access.
Before handing over the machine, verify that the deployed HMI contains the tested project, remove temporary write controls, and retain the final tag export. Where an HMI replacement is being considered, provide Kwoco with the existing panel model, Micro850 catalog number and project requirements so the hardware enquiry starts with the actual application.
